After nearly a century, Michigans only cigar
manufacturer opened its doors at the same location as the first stogie shop in Frankenmuth, The Hilbrandt Company. From 1906
until 1917, Hilbrandt manufactured cigars in what was known as Factory 623 of the State of Michigan. Hilbrandt was born here
in Saginaw County in 1883 and died in 1955.
Now in their new location, Keith Boesnecker and Constance Johnson run
what is known as the Frankenmuth Original Cigar Company. Keith heads up the wholesale tobacco department, while sister Connie
is the on-site expert torcedor (roller) and president of the Frankenmuth Original Cigar Company. Connie mastered her skill
attending intensive classes held at a cigar company in Texas.
The humble beginnings of the Frankenmuth Original Cigar
Company began with Keith while in college. Keith would dump out cigarette tobacco, save the tubes and insert pipe tobacco
to get a more pleasing taste, smell and smoke. Then a friend showed him how to roll cigars with tobacco leaves and for the
next 10 years Keith made his "Fat Rum Tavern Cigars" a hit with his friends and customers alike.
The Frankenmuth Original
Cigar Company now offers premium cigars in five different sizes, from Gigantas and Coronas down to petities. The cigars are
measured in rings of tobacco, and their sizes range form 42-ring to 52- ring. They use Cuban-seed, Dominican Republic-grown
leaves and roll up to 100 cigars weekly.
The Original Cigar Company also carries a wide variety of cigar smoking accessories,
such as hats, lighters, cutters, cigarettes, and a variety of flavors like Jack Whiskey, Frankenmuth black cherry and chocolate.
Plus, they also accept special orders and mail orders.
